- 4 steps
- Copy and paste, no coding
- Runs on every page
Squarespace + Octo Assist
Steps at a glance
What do you need before you start?
- A Squarespace plan that includes Code Injection: Core, Plus, Advanced, or a legacy plan that has it. The Basic plan doesn't.
- Owner or administrator access to the site.
- Your site added in your Octo Assist dashboard under your custom domain, for example example.com (www.example.com works too).
- An active Octo Assist plan. You can paste the code first, but the button only appears once a plan is active. See pricing.
How do you add Octo Assist to Squarespace?
Step 1: Open the Pages panel
With your code copied, log in to Squarespace and open the Pages panel for your site.
Step 2: Open Code Injection
Scroll to the bottom of the panel, click Custom Code, then click Code Injection. On a version 7.0 site, click Website Tools, then Code Injection.
Step 3: Paste the code in Footer
Paste your code into the Footer field. Squarespace adds code from this field just before the closing </body> tag on every page.
Step 4: Save
Click Save. See Squarespace's guide to code injection for more on these fields.
How do you know it worked?
Open your live site in a private (incognito) window, so you see it the way a new visitor does. Look for the round button in the bottom right corner, or bottom left if you chose that in your dashboard. Click it, or press Alt+Shift+A (Option+Shift+A on a Mac), to open the panel, then turn on a tool such as Text size to check that the page changes. Use your custom domain for this check.
What if the button doesn't show up?
Why don't I see the button while I'm editing my site?
Squarespace can turn off scripts in the editor preview, and that setting doesn't change what visitors see. Open your live site in a private window instead.
Why doesn't the button show on my squarespace.com address?
The widget only runs on the domain you added in your dashboard and its www version. If you added your custom domain, check the site there. The built-in squarespace.com address counts as a different site.
What happens if I change my Squarespace plan?
If you move to the Basic plan, Squarespace turns off Code Injection. Your code stays in the panel but no longer runs, so the button disappears until you move to a plan that includes Code Injection.
My dashboard says Needs a plan. Will the button show?
No. You can install the code before you choose a plan, but the button only appears once your plan is active. Choose a plan on the Billing page of your dashboard, then reload your site.
