How to add an accessibility widget with Google Tag Manager

To add Octo Assist with Google Tag Manager, create a Custom HTML tag with a short loader built from your install code, set it to fire on All Pages, then preview and publish. Use the loader rather than the plain line, because Tag Manager removes the data-site-id attribute from script tags. The button shows once your plan is active and your domain matches.
  • 5 steps
  • Copy and paste, no coding
  • Runs on every page

What do you need before you start?

  • Google Tag Manager installed on every page of your site.
  • Permission to publish the container.
  • Your site added in your Octo Assist dashboard under the domain visitors use, for example example.com (www.example.com works too).
  • An active Octo Assist plan. You can add the tag first, but the button only appears once a plan is active. See pricing.

How do you add Octo Assist to Google Tag Manager?

  1. Step 1: Create a new tag

With your code copied, open your container in Tag Manager, go to Tags and click New. Name it, for example Accessibility widget.

  2. Step 2: Choose Custom HTML

Click Tag Configuration and choose Custom HTML.

  3. Step 3: Paste the loader, not the plain line

Tag Manager rebuilds script tags from Custom HTML and drops data attributes, so the plain line would lose your site id. Paste the Tag Manager loader shown on this page instead, and replace YOUR_SITE_ID with the id from your own code (it starts with st_).

  4. Step 4: Fire it on All Pages

Click Triggering, choose All Pages and click Save.

  5. Step 5: Preview, then publish

Click Preview, enter your site's address and check in Tag Assistant that the tag fired. Then click Submit and Publish. See Google's guide to preview and debug for more.

How do you know it worked?

Open your live site in a private (incognito) window, so you see it the way a new visitor does. Look for the round button in the bottom right corner, or bottom left if you chose that in your dashboard. Click it, or press Alt+Shift+A (Option+Shift+A on a Mac), to open the panel, then turn on a tool such as Text size to check that the page changes. Do this after you publish: Preview mode only shows the tag in your own browser.

What if the button doesn't show up?

The button doesn't show, or doesn't use my dashboard settings.

Check that the tag holds the loader from step 3, not the plain one-line code. Tag Manager drops the data-site-id attribute from a plain script tag, so the widget can't load your site's settings. Replace it with the loader, then publish again.

I tested it in Preview. Why don't visitors see the button?

Preview only runs your changes in your own browser. Click Submit and Publish so the tag goes live for everyone.

Why do some visitors not get the button?

Some ad and tracker blockers block Google Tag Manager, and then every tag in it is skipped, including this one. Adding the code straight to your site's HTML avoids that. See the guide for any website.

Why doesn't the button show on my site?

Most often the address doesn't match. The widget only runs on the domain you added in your dashboard and its www version. If you added example.com, it also runs on www.example.com, but not on shop.example.com or a staging address. If you added www.example.com, it won't run on example.com, so add the domain without www. Your browser's console also shows a short note that says why the widget is hidden.
