Octo Assist

For e-commerce

Accessibility widget for e-commerce websites

Octo Assist adds a button to your store that lets shoppers adjust each page to their needs, with larger text, clearer contrast, highlighted links and calmer pages. It helps people read product details and move through your store with a keyboard. It does not fix your store's code, so pair it with fixes to images, forms and checkout.

The challenge

What gets in the way for your visitors?

Three things that make e-commerce websites hard to use, and that the right tools can ease.

  • Small print and faint text

Prices, sizes, delivery dates and return rules are often set in small or light gray text. Shoppers with low vision can miss key facts and leave.

  • Busy pages that won't sit still

Sliding banners, autoplay video and animated badges pull attention away from the product. For some people, motion on the page is tiring or makes them feel unwell.

  • Forms that are easy to get lost in

Sign-up, address and payment forms ask for careful reading and typing. If you can't see which field is active or can't reach a button by keyboard, you can't finish.

How does it help shoppers browse and buy?

  • Text size enlarges prices, product names and form fields to 120%, 140% or 160%, including content your store loads later, like more products in a list.
  • Smart contrast turns only hard-to-read text black or white, so your brand colors stay as they are everywhere else.
  • Stop animations ends CSS motion, pauses videos on the page and freezes animated GIFs.
  • Focus outline and Keyboard shortcuts help keyboard users see where they are and jump to the next form field (F) or button (B).
  • Highlight links makes every link stand out, so shoppers can find size guides, delivery details and contact pages.

Each shopper's settings are saved in their own browser, so they stay on from the home page to the cart. If a shopper still gets stuck, they can use Report a problem in the panel, and you see their message in your dashboard.

The widget only runs on pages that load your code. Some platforms host checkout on pages you can't add code to. On Shopify, for example, checkout pages don't load your theme's code.

What should you still fix in your store?

A widget gives shoppers ways to adjust your pages. It can't change how your store is built. These fixes help every shopper, including people who use screen readers and other assistive technology:

  • Write a short text description for every product image. See the alt text guide.
  • Give every form field a visible label, and make error messages say what to fix.
  • Make sure shoppers can reach and use every button, menu and filter with a keyboard. See the keyboard accessibility guide.
  • Check your text and button colors with the color contrast checker.
  • Don't show sale prices or stock levels with color alone. Add words like "Sale" or "Out of stock".
  • Give sliding banners a pause button, or don't move them automatically.

How do you set it up?

Sign up, add your store's domain and paste one line of code into your theme. Follow the guide for Shopify, WordPress, Wix, Squarespace or any website. Then choose your button color, its position and which tools shoppers see in your dashboard.

Frequently asked questions

Does an accessibility widget make my online store ADA compliant?

No. The widget gives shoppers tools to adjust how your pages look and behave, but it cannot fix problems in your store's own code, such as missing image descriptions, unlabeled form fields or buttons that can't be reached by keyboard. Those need to be fixed in your store's theme or code.

Will the widget slow down my store?

It is built to stay out of the way. The script is about 20 KB compressed and loads after your page content, so your products show first.

Will the widget appear on my checkout page?

It appears on every page that loads your install code. Some platforms run checkout on pages you can't add code to. On Shopify, for example, checkout pages don't load your theme's code, so the button shows on your storefront pages but not in checkout.

Do shoppers need an account to use it?

No. Shoppers just click the button. Their settings are saved in their own browser, with no account and no cookies.
