Planning a weekend in the mountains

Trail conditions updated live

A short trip to the mountains is one of the easiest ways to rest. You don't need special gear for most marked trails, but a little planning makes the weekend safer and more fun. This guide covers when to go, what to pack and how to choose a trail that suits everyone in your group.

When should you go?

Late spring and early autumn are often the best times. Paths are dry, days are long enough, and the summer crowds have not arrived yet or have gone home. Check the weather table before you book, and look at the packing list.

What should you pack?

  • Comfortable shoes with a good grip
  • A warm layer and a rain jacket, even in summer
  • Water, snacks and a small first-aid kit
  • A paper map, in case your phone has no signal

How do you pick the right trail?

Choose a trail for the slowest person in your group. Look at the distance, the height you will climb and how long the walk usually takes. Start early, so you have time to rest and still get back before dark.

“The best trail is the one everyone in your group enjoys finishing.”
