For small business

Accessibility widget for small business websites

Octo Assist adds a button to your small business website that lets customers adjust each page, with larger text, more spacing, high contrast, read aloud and more. You paste one line of code and choose the tools in your dashboard. It doesn't fix your site's code, so plan a few simple fixes too.

The challenge

What gets in the way for your visitors?

Three things that make small business websites hard to use, and that the right tools can ease.

  • No time and no developer

You run the business and the website. Accessibility work competes with everything else on your list.

  • Customers who struggle with small text

Menus, opening hours, prices and phone numbers are often small, light or placed over photos. Older customers and people with low vision can miss them.

  • A site built on a template

Most small business sites use a website builder, so you can't easily change how the theme works. You can usually add a line of custom code.

What does it give your customers?

How do you set it up?

  1. Sign up and add your website's domain.
  2. Copy the one-line install code from your dashboard.
  3. Paste it into your site, using the guide for WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace or Webflow.
  4. Choose your button color, its position and which tools appear.

Some website builders only allow custom code on paid plans. Each guide lists what your builder needs.

What should you still fix?

  • Put your menu, prices and opening hours in real text, not only in images. The widget can't enlarge or read out text that is part of a picture.
  • Add a short text description to important images. See the alt text guide.
  • Check your colors with the color contrast checker.
  • Label every field in your contact and booking forms.

The website accessibility checklist walks you through the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to know how to code?

No. You copy one line from your dashboard and paste it into your website builder's custom code setting or your site's footer. The install guides show each step.

Will the widget slow down my website?

It is built to stay out of the way. The script is about 20 KB compressed and loads after your page content.

Does the widget protect my business from accessibility lawsuits?

No. No widget can promise that. Accessibility laws focus on your site's own code and content, which a script cannot fix. The widget helps visitors adjust your pages, and you should still fix the issues in your site.

Can I use it on more than one website?

Yes. Each website gets its own settings and its own line of code. How many websites you can add depends on your plan.
